Posters, currency, an armband, photographs, and other souvenirs gathered during Bradley's World War I service as an officer with the American Expeditionary Forces in Europe and following the war as a member of the American section of the Permanent International Armistice Commission (Nov. 1918-Aug. 1919). Collection includes draft notice, 1915; posters; currency; vouchers; comic map of the St. Mihiel salient entitled "Laughic Scummary of Ignorance" issued by the A.E.F. Second Army in commemoration of the signing of the Armistice (11 Nov. 1918); [a "salient" is a bulge in a line between two opposing armed forces, requiring the defense of three sides; during Sept. 1918, the town of St. Mihiel, France, south of Verdun, gave its name to a battle during the Meuse-Argonne operation in which Gen. John J. Pershing lead American troops in the first major offensive of the Great War involving an American division]. Other items include handwritten menu, 12 May 1919, from a dinner hosted by the PIAC in honor of Gen. Pershing; and photograph taken outside a villa in Spa, Belgium, showing Bradley and other members of the American section of the PIAC, including Gen. Pershing. Also including Columbia, S.C., High School report card, 1897-1898, issued to Bradley's wife, Jane Vander Horst Heyward Trenholm; European travel journal (May-Sept. 1907) of Jane Trenholm, including account of a visit in Milan with the former Jane T. Perry of Charleston, S.C., who had married the Duke of Litta in 1893; passenger list for the ship Menominee on which she sailed from Philadelphia to Antwerp; pencil sketches, postcards, and photographs re the tour, and accounts of her return voyage, a trip marred by a storm, engine trouble, and excessive demands on the crew by some of her fellow passengers. Other items include stock certificates from the Columbia Stage Co. (1924), Spring Lake, Inc. (1935), and Columbia Films, Inc. (1958); certificate (1925) documenting Bradley's appointment to Army infantry major; and 14 volumes (1949-1953) of correspondence re Southern accents and South Carolina dialects, chiefly in response to a newspaper column edited by Bradley.
